On Thursday, 26th March, 2020, National Muslim Prison Board (NMPB) handed over a donation amounting to 2.5 Million Kwacha to the Southern Region Prison headquarters in Blantyre.
The donation has been made available to assist the prison officers who are on the frontline of the battle and inmates in prisons to prevent from the Coronavirus pandemic.
A statement signed by Executive Director for National Muslim Prisoners Board ,Brother Abbas Panjwan reads, “In response to ongoing Covid-19 pandemic, National Muslim Prison Board, in close consultation with the southern region Malawi prison service embarked on a project through hand sanitation project towards mitigating the impact of the deadly Covid-19 virus”.
World Health Organisation (WHO) is on a campaign to curb Coronavirus.
WHO issued guidelines on how to prevent Covid-19 and these include emphasising that schools should be closed , reduced the number of visitors and guardians in hospitals and social distancing , maximum group of people below 100, hand washing with soap and hand sanitizer among others.
Mr Panjwan says It is because of these facts that prompted them to assist the inmates because the inmates cannot go home.
“Running water is a luxury, maximum gathering of 100? Impossible with the cells they are confined and one basic meal a day leads to malnutrition.
“The National Muslim Prisoners Board embarked on a national wide campaign covering all stations of the Malawi prison services including the regional offices in all 4 of their regions as well as the head office in zomba,” reads a statement.
NMPB has managed to distribute
110 washing stations which includes 30litres bucket with a tap together with a basin. 213 cartons of soap
55*5litre disinfectant liquid
1,000 face mask.
The total value of this contribution is K 2.5 million and aimed to benefit all the almost 15’000 inmates in the country from Nsanje to chitipa. Reads the statement
