Nikah and Other Islamic Functions has agreed to not proceed with inviting the Muslim Association of Malawi national chairman Sheikh Idrissa Muhammad citing the K50,000.00 scandal as a major reason, Malawi Muslims Official Website can reveal.
According to the well-placed source who attended the meeting which took place in Blantyre on Sunday, August 21 some people in the organisation proposed to invite the new MAM chairman to be a Guest of Honour at this year’s Eid Fitr which the organisation has organised to take place at Chichiri Upper Stadium but they have decided not to proceed with the invitation saying some people will not be comfortable with his attendance.
“We planned to invite the national chairman of MAM to be our Guest if Honour after Mufti Cassim Abbas said he will not be available as he would be attending another prayers in Mangochi. But, with the K50,000.00 scandal, members have decided not to proceed with the invitation fearing that other people will not be comfortable. So, we have just agreed that there should be no guest of honour this time,” said the source who spoke on condition of anonymity as he is not allowed to speak for the organisation.
However, NIFA Publicity Secretary Brother Issah Kazembe has since expressed ignorance on the allegations. He said as NIFA, they cancelled the invitation after learning that the chairman will be out of the country by such date, hence, he will not be available.
“Those are two different stories and it has nothing to do with our invitation. What I know is that the chairman was in Zambia last week and there are reports that he will as well be out of the country on Eid Fitr day. That is why members agreed not to proceed with the invitation to give him a chance to proceed with his already arranged programmes,” said Kazembe.
On Saturday, Muslims in Malawi accused some Muslim Association of Malawi (MAM) trustees and executive members of receiving bribes from Professor Peter Mutharika, a Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) torchbearer for 2014 general elections.
National Zakaat Fund national chairman, Biton Ajawa who is also one of the executive members (who also attended the meeting but walked out) said some MAM executive members and trustees on Thursday evening received K50, 000 each from Professor Peter Mutharika as one way of lobbying the Muslim community to support his 2014 presidential bid the thing that brought anger to the Muslim community with some saying the organisation has no mandate to force the all community to follow the political party they do not like.
The Chairman is alleged as to have been one of the executive members and trustees who received K50,000 each from the Professor Peter Mutharika.
