The much awaited May 20 date is finally here. Tomorrow is the day when Malawians will be exercising their right to choose their representatives for the next five years in the 2014 tripartite elections.
All eyes are mainly on the presidential elections, where 11 candidates are battling it out against the incumbent Mrs Joyce Banda.
They are two women, Dr Joyce Banda (PP) and Abusa Hellen Singh (UIP).
Two theologians, Dr Lazarus Chakwera (MCP) and Abusa Helen Singh (UIP).
One Muslim contestant, Atupele Muluzi (UDF).
The other candidates are Kamuzu Chibambo (Petra), Davies Katsonga (Chipani cha Fuko), George Mnesa (Mafunde), Dr Peter Chisi (Umodzi), Prof Peter Mutharika (DPP), Mark Katsonga Phiri (PPM), Friday Jumbe (Labour), and James Nyondo (Nasaf), making it the most highly contested presidential elections ever.
It appears that it is easy to step one’s foot at Sanjika Palace!
Everything is now left in the hands of Malawians to choose their own destinity. They listened with much curiosity during the 2 months campaign period when each of the presidential hopefuls laid down their plans on how they will turn around the economy, improve the health systems, uplift the education standards, protect the enviroment, among others.
The Malawi Electoral Commission should be commended on the way they have handled the electoral process so far. They have demonstrated a high degree of competence and commitment for a credible, free and fair elections. We have all the confidence that they will now handle the vote counting process in a transparent and accountable manner.
