Police at Nkhunga in Nkhotakota district have arrested three people for allegedly stealing 54 bags of Affordable Inputs Program (AIP) fertilizer.
Nkhunga Police Station Public Relations Officer Thandiwe Maseko Mshanga has
identified the suspects asButi Banda 47, Titus Phiri, 35 and Isaac Mafupa, 32.
According to Mshanga, on January 13, 2023 Smallholder Farmers Revolving Fund of Malawi sales clerks were deployed at Dema Primary School which is one of the AIP distribution centres to deliver 1200 bags of Urea and 600 bags of NPK fertilizers.
“The sales clerks verified the numbers with the chiefs and Agricultural Development Committee members in the area. Then on February 8, 2023 the clerks started distributing the fertilizers and at the end of the exercise it was discovered that 54 bags of fertilizer worthy k4, 050,000.00 were missing,” she says.
Meanwhile the three have since been charged with theft by servant and they will appear in court soon.
Phiri and Banda hail from Kada Village while Mafupa hails from Mafupa Village, all from Traditional Authority Kanyenda in Nkhotakota District.
