Police at Namwera in Mangochi district have arrested three people suspected to have murdered their brother-in-law, Shaibu Adam, 87, on July 8, 2023, over family disputes.
Mangochi police public relations officer, Inspector Amina Tepani Daudi has identified the suspects as William Thaliban Mmadi, 34, Semu Allie, 25, and Malita Asani, 56, all from Chiwaula village in Traditional Authority Jalasi in Mangochi district.
According to Daudi, the deceased, who was a widower, has been living at his late wife’s compound despite her passing years ago. This led to quarrels between him and his in-laws, who wanted him to return to his home village.
“On the afternoon of July 8, 2023,the victim’s son was surprised not to find his father at home as usual. Upon investigating, he discovered the back door widely opened and his father’s lifeless body lying in a pool of blood,” Daudi says.
She adds:”The matter was reported to Namwera Police Post, prompting a swift response from the authorities. Upon reaching the crime scene, they found the victim with multiple stab wounds, a deep cut on the neck, and both eyes removed.”
Daudi says the police immediately launched an investigation and soon learnt that the three suspects had fled the village, their whereabouts unknown.
“However, after a few days, they resurfaced, and members of the community tipped off the police, leading to their arrest in the early hours of July 20, 2023,”
The three has been charged with murder contrary to Section 209 of the Penal Code. They are expected to appear before court once the investigation is completed,according to Daudi.
