Two minors have drowned in different occasions in the lakeshore district of Nkhotakota.
Nkhotakota Police station deputy public relations officer Chisomo Chuma say the occurred on January 02, 2023 at Lingozi River and Chia Lagoon respectively.
“Umali Ashim, 15, born epileptic went missing on December 25, 2022 at Masakatira Village. He was later found dead floating along Lingozi river in a decomposed state on January 02, 2023,”
“While Bashil Phiri, 14, on a canoe went to Chia Lagoon on January 02, 2023 along with his friend for fishing. In the process, the canoe capsized and Phiri drowned,” Chuma says.
Both matters were reported to Nkhotakota Police Station where the scene was visited in acompany of a medical personnel from Nkhotakota District Hospital.
Postmortem conducted established that the cause of death was due to suffocation secondary to drowning.
Umali Ashim hailed from Masakatira Village in Traditional Authority Mwadzama while Bashil Phiri hailed from Sambo Village in Traditional Authority Kalimanjira in Nkhotakota District respectively.
Meanwhile, police are advising parents and guardians to take care of their children and not let them go to the lake or rivers alone to avoid similar deaths.
