The Publicity Secretary of the opposition Democratic Progressive Party (DPP),Nicolus Dausi has asked the party’s President, Professor Peter Mutharika to reveal his stand on the endorsements that he must lead the party in 2025 general elections.
According to Dausi, DPP is a democratic party that allows its followers to contest in various positions during party conventions.
“We just hear about the endorsements that the former President, Professor Peter Mutharika must lead the party in 2025 general elections. The president must come clear on the endorsements. We need to Professor Mutharika that before the 2025 general elections, we will face him at the party convention,” Dausi made the remarks during a party’s press conference underway at Golden Peacock in Lilongwe.
According to Dausi, the convention of the party should take place before July 2023 inline with the constitution and no any member must change the laws of the party to serve their interests.
“DPP constitution is very clear on the elections. We need to hold the elections before July, 2023 to allow people contest for various positions. There is nothing like imposing a candidate in DPP,” he says.
Dausi says the disagreements in the party is a bad ingredient ahead of the 2025 elections.
“It is high time that we need to come together and plan for the future. We need to handle meetings and strategize on how we will hold a convention ,” Dausi says.
Recently, some DPP top officials including the party’s Vice President for the northern region, Goodall Gondwe endorsed Mutharika as their flag bearer in 2025 elections. Meanwhile, the endorsements have divided the party. Some people within the party think Mutharika should allow new faces to take over the leadership.
Among other people interested to lead the party include DPP Vice President for the Southern region , Kondwani Nankhumwa, DPP Vice President for the Eastern region, Bright Msaka and Former Reserve Bank Governor Dalitso Kabambe.
