On Wednesday, this week, Malawians who paid their last respect to the newly appointed Director of Criminal Investigation (CID) whose rank was Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) Bob Mtekama in the Malawi Police Service (MPS) ignored COVID-19 preventive measures.
Several people escorted the “Top Crime Buster” to his resting place at his home village in Nkhono, Traditional Authority Malengachanzi in Nkhotakota district without following social distancing to curb COVID-19 pandemic.
Late Mtekama succumbed to Diabetes according a family member on Tuesday, this week at Seventh Day Adventist Hospital in Blantyre.
As of yesterday, the Presidential Taskforce on COVID-19 said Malawi had registered 65 new COVID-19 cases, 59 new recoveries, and one new death. The new death was from Mzimba North.
According to the Taskforce, of the new cases, 61 were locally transmitted infections and four were imported infections. Of the locally transmitted infections, 24 were from Lilongwe, 17 from Blantyre, four each from Mzimba South and Nkhotakota, three from Dowa, two each from Chiradzulu and Mzimba North, and one each from Karonga, Mangochi, Mwanza, Neno and Nsanje.
The imported cases were identified at Mwanza border through routine screening and two were from Blantyre, and one each from Balaka, and Dedza.
Cumulatively, Malawi had recorded 4,491 cases including 137 deaths. Of these cases, 1,021 were imported infections and 3,470 were locally transmitted.
Cumulatively, 2,137 cases have now recovered bringing the total number of active cases to 2,217. The average age of the cases is 36.7 years, the youngest case being aged 1 month, the oldest being 93 years and 66.9% are male. The country has so far conducted 32,466 COVID- 19 tests in 45 COVID-19 testing sites of which 786 tests have been done in the past 24 hours.
