Malawi police say they have not arrested anyone for not wearing Face Masks as a precautionary measure to defeat COVID-19 pandemic.
Yesterday, social media reports indicated that several Malawians were arrested for not wearing face masks in public places.
National Police Spokesperson James Kadadzera, however, told local media that the allegations are false.
“No person has been arrested for not wearing a face mask at a public place anywhere in Malawi, ” he says
Kadadzera says Malawians are following all precautionary to prevent themselves from contracting or spreading the pandemic.
“Since the new rules and regulations on COVID-19 Prevention, Containment and Management became enforceable on August 8, 2020, most Malawians in busy places are pleasingly complying with the set standards,” he says.
The false reports were alleging that Malawi Police had arrested 145 people in Chikwawa among other districts for not wearing face masks.
The Presidential Taskforce on COVID-19 gazetted regulations including mandatory wearing face masks in public places to curb COVID-19 to defeat COVID-19 pandemic that has killed over 150 people in the country.
