Malawi Vice President Dr Saulos Chilima says the Tonse Alliance Government is geared to improve the living standards of youths in the country by among others creating more job opportunities for them.
Chilima made the remarks this morning during a conference on youth development and employment in Malawi jointly organised by the Malawi government, the European Union(EU) and the African Union (AU).
Chilima affirmed Malawi’s commitment to global agenda on youth development.
“I also discussed the nexus between youth and employment situation in Malawi while highlighting Government’s vision to ensure a more inclusive country for all including the youth,”
“I further observed that while the social and economic importance of the youth is nationally acknowledged in strategic documents, Malawi’s youth sector remains maligned both in terms of political status and fiscal priority in budgetary allocations,” Chilima says.
The Vice President says in an environment where the education system is predominantly tilted towards preparing graduates for white collar employment, economic stagnation or jobless economic growth have resulted in growing youth disillusionment and despondency about their economic prospects.
“However, these are the issues that are at the heart of some of us and through His Excellency Dr. Lazarus Chakwera, President of the Republic, we will ensure that our youths have jobs, supported with business opportunities as well as acquire vocational skills,” Chilima says.
Meanwhile, the Vice President is at the Lilongwe University of Agriculture and Natural Resources (Luanar) main Campus following up and inspecting Reforms related projects that the institution is implementing.
