A 35 year old man is in police custody at Nkhotakot police station for defiling a 15 year old girl.
The incident occurred during the month of December 2014 at Malasa village in Nkhotakota.
The suspect, identified as Brighton Favor Mbewe (35) of Mtakataka village in the area of traditional authority Kadewere in Chiradzulu district who is a Pastor of a well known church (name withheld) was arrested on Monday the 23rd February, 2015 following the allegation that he defiled a15 year old girl.
The victim (name withheld) who is a standard seven learner at St Paul’s primary school told the police that she used to gather in the church which the said Pastor led. She further said has been called to the house of the Pastor frequently to assist him on house chores since he is single.
During this time he has been defiling the girl up until the victim’s mother got suspicious, and then she took her daughter to Nkhotakota district hospital for examination. The medical report revealed that the victim is three months pregnant.
Upon receipt of the medical results the girl was questioned and revealed that the time she has been called to the house of the Pastor she was defiled several times. She said the Pastor told her not to disclose the ordeal.
Meanwhile the suspect is at Nkhotakota police station where he is expected to appear before Nkhotakota magistrate court when the police conclude investigations, to answer a charge of defilement which is contrary to section 138 of the Penal Code and this provides a maximum penalty of life imprisonment with hard labor when one is found guilty.
