Islam has given us a clear definition of unity and brotherhood and how it can be realized and implemented. The uniting factor is the `Aqeedah (creed) of Islam which defines the belief of a Muslim. Unlike other bonds (nationalistic, patriotic, etc.) which are superficial, animalistic, reactive, emotional, and completely devoid of a real solution for life’s affairs, the intellectuality of the ideological bond of Islam unites man irrespective of their race, nationality, and other factors which are irrelevant when it comes to bonding on an ideological creed.
Allah in the Qur’an describes what is unity in Islam as the Mu’minoon (Believers; those that believe in Allah and His Messenger Muhammad) being united in a Brotherhood based on solely Islam:
“The Mu’minoon are but a single Brotherhood.” (The Holy Qur’an, 49:10)
Allah further defines this Brotherhood by explaining that Muslims are awliyyaa’ (allies, friends, and supporters) of one another and this again is based solely on Islam:
“The Believers, men and women, are protectors one of another: they enjoin the ma`roof (all of Islam), and forbid the munkar (all that is evil; kufr): they observe regular prayers, pay Zakat, and obey Allah and His Messenger. On them will Allah pour His mercy: for Allah is Exalted in power, Wise.” (The Holy Qur’an, 9:71)
Muhammad (pbuh) indicated in several Ahadith on unity and brotherhood as we can see in his (saaws) Farewell Sermon (khuTbat ul-wadaa`):
“All mankind is from Adam and Eve, an Arab has no superiority over a non-Arab nor a non-Arab has any superiority over an Arab; also a white has no superiority over black nor a black has any superiority over white except by piety and good action. Learn that every Muslim is a brother to every Muslim and that the Muslims constitute one brotherhood.”
Other Ahadith further elaborate on the concept of unity and brotherhood:
“A Muslim is the brother of another Muslim. He does not oppress him, nor does he leave him at the mercy of others.” (Sahih Muslim Book 032, Number 6219)
The Prophet said, “None of you will have faith till he wishes for his (Muslim) brother what he likes for himself.” (Sahih Al-Bukhari Volume 1, Book 2, Number 12)
As the teachings of Islam clearly show us that Brotherhood and unity in Islam are based solely on the `Aqeedah of Islam (which is the foundation of Muslim belief). The Mu’minoon are believers to one another and this belief has nothing to do with race or any other type of invalid reason to unite but is rather a bond based on an ideological belief in Islam.
I feel very sorry to see Muslim brothers fighting each other with insulting words or sometimes it reaches to blood shading for no justified reasons. I have few examples here; see what is happening to Iraqi Sunnis and Shia , are busy fighting each other leaving the occupants in green havens plundering their resources. The same is happening in Afghanistan, Lebanon, Palestine (Hamas & Fateh). Here back home (Malawi) you will feel ashamed to learn that with this limited number of Muslims others are busy creating groupings just to make sure that Muslims are not united, and create enmity in the Muslim community so that they manage to rule the Ummah so easily. Unfortunately we responded to this conspiracy in a negative way, now we are paying the price, just see the so-called the Sunnis and the Qadria busy blackmailing, castigating and exchanging hot words on an open ground , why all this!!. Should we say that the Ummah has lost the direction?
May Allah reunite the Ummah. Aameen.
It is true that Islam has always emphasised on brotherhood. It is the outside force that split us for various reasons that are not essential at all to the islamic society. If we take Palestinian Fateh and Hamas, you would see that Hamas has parteners mostly from islamic countries while Fateh seems to have some favours from west. This mentality creates tension between the two sides.Talking about our home, politics is the force that is spliting muslims. This angle is so dangerous and distructive if not addressed.Fellow muslims, let us put political differences aside and re-consider the status of islam and act, inshaallah.
Brother you are right, all these misunderstandings among the Muslim brothers the source of this is the out side force, who always wishes to see the Ummah in wrangles. We take this Hamas and Fateh as our good example, these two groups are busy exchanging accusations leaving the mantle of their problem the occupation (Israel). See when Fateh wants an advice goes to USA to seek it, at the same time vows not to take any kind of advice or seat together with their Muslim brothers (Hamas) accusing it a terrorist grouping, what a shame. I don't know if they don't realize the concrete relationship that exist between USA and Israel for them to go and seek that so-called advice. Here in Malawi we find the same mistake happening from other members of the community, allowing these greedy and failed politicians to use them to destroy the Muslim Ummah in the name of power balance, what power is that they want to balance? Its high time now the Ummah should wake up and say no to this selfish leaders who just want to use the name ISLAM to save their hidden agendas. And to the outsiders I hope the message here is clear and straight forward, stop that dirty game of using the Muslim to fight another Muslim if you are really God fearing people. My dear brother/sisters in Islam lets wake up, our enemies shall never feel happy to see us united because they know mu umodzi muli mphamvu. Don't forget the believers are brothers in all conditions.
