The Human Rights Defenders Coalition (HRDC), has appealed to the Anti – Corruption Bureau [ACB] to commence investigations of allegations of corruption on the procurement of Ambulances by the Ministry of Health.
The HRDC claims to have received credible information of the bidders of Toyota Malawi, Nissan Malawi, Mike Appel and Gatto, ARK Agencies, Grandview international, Med Point Dazzie, Paramount holdings, Sky waves and Good hope for the Land Cruiser and Nissan patrol ranging from $ 47,800.00 – $ 112,281.88.
The organization says Grandview International of Lusaka, Zambia was on number 4 and had over $25000 higher prices than Toyota Malawi which was $ 47,800.00, alleging that apart from being cheaper, Toyota Malawi also offered 2 years of free service of the vehicles.
This is contained in a statement signed by its Chairperson, Gift Trapence dated 10th September, 2020 on the allegations of corruption on the procurement of Ambulances by the Ministry of Health.
In the statement, the HRDC says in a whistleblower initiative, it has received information of a notification of award of a contract to Grandview international of Lusaka, Zambia to supply 35 Toyota Land Cruiser Ambulances.
The HRDC says Grandview international is also a controversial in their home country, Zambia, that the opposition leader, Chishimba Kambwili is alleged to have referred to the company due to their alleged closeness to the Zambian presidency.
“Grandview international is a subject of investigation by the Anti – Corruption Commission in Zambia in their supply of 42 fire Trucks at $ 1 million each,”reads the statement in part.
The HRDC says given that Malawian companies were even cheaper, they are surprised that this contract was awarded to a seemingly questionable Zambian company, urging the ACB to commence the investigations in as soon as possible and update the nation when the investigations have started.
