Residents of Kankao and Chanthunya in Balaka district have a reason to smile as the area will soon witness a police unit at Kankao.
This has been disclosed by the Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) responsible for Eastern Region, Josaya Kanthiti on Thursday.
The Deputy Commissioner said this during his visit to the area following the donation of some buildings for the police unit the Catholic community made earlier this week.
Accompanied by the Officer-In-Charge of Balaka, Senior Deputy Commissioner of Police (SDCP), Maxmus Bakali, the DCP Kanthiti assured Kankao community that the police unit in the area will be opened soon.
Meanwhile, four houses for police officers and an office building have been provided by Kankao Catholic Parish. The office block however, needs some rehabilitation before the unit is opened.
On his part, Inkosi Chanthunya appreciated police management for the initiative. Chanthunya thanked the Malawi Police Service through Eastern Region Police and Balaka Police Station for the development, saying security will be tightened in his area. The traditional leader further hailed Kankao catholic community for provision of officers’ houses and the office block.
Chanthunya therefore promised to work hand in hand with officers that will be deployed for the provision of security of the area.
The Officer-In-Charge of Balaka Police, SDCP Maxmus Bakali, appreciated for the good relationship that exists between police and the community. Bakali assured the community of security for their lives and property towards creating a free crime zone in the area.
Bakali further warned the community against acting wrongly against the officers, saying they (officers) are human beings too. He therefore advised them to report misconduct of the officers to superiors so that right actions are taken against those bad apples.
