According to a statement issued by the taskforce’s Co-Chairperson Dr John Phuka, the two new deaths are from Blantyre.

Dr Phuka says all new cases are locally transmitted infections, 59 of these are from Lilongwe, 16 each from Blantyre and Zomba, 12 from Karonga, four from Salima, three each from Mzimba North and Nkhata Bay, two from Rumphi, and one each from Balaka, Chiradzulu, Dedza, Likoma, Mangochi, Mchinji, Mzimba North, and Ntheu.

“Cumulatively, Malawi has recorded 3,981 cases including 109 deaths. Of these cases, 983 are imported infections and 2,998 are locally transmitted,”

“Cumulatively, 1,807 cases have now recovered bringing the total number of active cases to 2,065. The average age of the cases is 36 years, the youngest case is aged 1 month, the oldest is 93 years and 66.6% are male. The country has so far conducted 29,599 COVID-19 tests in 39 COVID-19 testing sites,” Says Phuka in a statement.

Dr Phuka reminds the public that COVID-19 virus spreads primarily by human-to- human transmission of secretions of saliva and respiratory droplets, which are produced when an infected person coughs, sneezes, speaks,or sings. Infection can also occur when individuals touch contaminated surfaces and then the eyes, nose or mouth before cleaning their hands,” he says in a statement.
