Mangochi police criminal investigations personnel on December 23 and 24, 2019 arrested five suspected thieves in a sweeping exercise.
Mangochi police public relations officer Rodrick Maida said the exercise targeted wanted culprits that terrorised Mangochi boma and went away with various properties from November to December 2019.
“Culprits that have been arrested are Thokozani Hassan (24) of village Chiutula in Traditional Authority Jalasi in Mangochi district, Duncan Kamoto (38) of village Muhowa in Traditional Authority Mkhumba in Phalombe district, Hassan Ching’amba (22) of village khumbanyiwa in Traditional Authority Ntchema in Chiradzulu district, Ali Chitedze (37) of village Mtalimanja in Traditional Authority Mponda in Mangochi and Dickson Julius (25) of village Chitimba in Traditional Authority Mkola in Phalombe district,” Maida said.
He said the arrest of the suspected thieves led to recovery of stolen properties worth over Three Million Kwacha.
“Some of the items are Sonny Hi-fi system, Telefunken plasma, Yamato DVD player, Apple iPhone 7, itel pad, Telefunken home theater,one generator, car keys, 8 laptop bags, one car battery, Lenovo iPad, Huawei mobile phone, Hi-fi speaker, assorted curtains and assorted remotes,” He said.
According to Maida, more arrests and recoveries are expected to be made as investigations are still in progress and some of the stolen properties were sold as far as Mozambique.
Suspects will appear before court after completion of paper work.
Meanwhile police in the district is thanking the community for tipping off the police station with fruitful information.
