The Deputy lnspector General of Police responsible for operations Mr. Casper Chalera, has urged officers manning the bordering districts to maintain the good relationship with members of the public and collaborate with neighbouring security institutions.
The call was made on February 10, 2023 during his visit to Ngapani and Maleta Police Units in Mangochi district respectively.
In his address, Chalera applauded Ngapani Police Unit for maintaining good relationship with the communities which resulted into the arrest of an Ugandan on December 6, 2022 who was found with three pistols and 64 live ammunition and is now serving a 9-year jail term at Zomba Maximum Prison.
“I’m encouraging you to collaborate with community leaders, utilise your roles and come up with good community structures in order to halt crimes along the border,” Chalera said.
Speaking during the same encounter, the Eastern Region Commissioner of Police Ms. Violet Magwaya promised to beef up security by deploying more officers with the aim of speeding up security matters in her policing area.
Chalera also paid a courtesy call at Chizzimbiri Police Camp in Mozambique where he encouraged them to continue working as a family in halting inter border crimes and immediate sharing of any information regarding terrorism.
In his response, the Commander for the police camp Assistant Superintendent Edson Malina applauded the Malawian delegate for the visit and echoed that indeed corporation is important especially when two countries are sharing boundaries.
Chalera also interacted with a Consultant for lnternational Organisation for Migration(IOM) Mr Mbuno Jombo who is in the area for a survey on conflict promotion project.
On his way back, Chalera addressed members of the communities at Kwisimba Trading Centre whereby GVH Kwisimba and business personnel were present.
“Police is committed to building bridges leading in the forefront of protecting every citizen. I urge you to stop the tendency of harbouring criminals and report to the police any suspicious dealings and faces in your communities” Chalera concluded.
The Officer ln-charge for Mangochi Police Station Mr. Timothy Phiri (SACP), Director for Criminal Investigation Department Mr. George M’njale(ACP), Eastern Regional Operations Officer Mr Donnie Chionda(ACP) and Eastern Regional Criminal Investigation Officer Superintendent Edwin Kanyemba are some of the senior officers who made up the entourage.
