Mangochi Police station is keeping in custody Justine Matola aged 18 for allegedly killing a 60-year old woman over witchcraft accusations.
Mangochi police public relations officer Rodrick Maida said the incident occurred on the night of December 16 2019 at Mgundaphiri village, Traditional Authority Mponda in the district.
“Preliminary investigations reveal that the suspect stabbed Getrude Banda several times on the back and neck after accusing her of bewitching his sick mother,” Maida said.
Banda was rushed to Mangochi District Hospital where she was pronounced dead upon arrival.
Her body is being kept at the mortuary pending postmortem.
The suspect has been charged with murder and he will appear before the court after completion of paper work.
The suspect comes from Mtalimanja village in Traditional Authority Mponda in Mangochi District while the deceased hailed from Endinyongeni village in Traditional Authority Mtwalo in Mzimba District.
