Police in Nkhotakota district are keeping in custody two men for allegedly killing Maxwell Paundi aged 31 who was a thief.
Nkhotakota Police Station Deputy Police Public Relations Officer Paul Malimwe says the two have been identified as Evance Mussa, 32, of Maliseni Village and Aliya Zangaphe, 31, of Kaunda Village, both under Traditional Authority Mwadzama in Nkhotakota district.
According to Malimwe, it is suspected that the deceased was a well known criminal in the area.
“On August 23, 2020 around 23:40 hours, Paundi is suspected to have been caught stealing in Evance Mussa’s house, and the duo are suspected to have severely assaulted him before dumping him along Nkhotakota – Salima M5 road unconscious,”
“He was later taken to Nkhotakota District Hospital by well wishers and died on August 25, 2020 whilst receiving treatment,”. Malimwe says.
Postmortem reveals that Paundi died due to haemorrhage secondary to assault.
Malimwe says following the death, police arrested the two suspects and will appear before court soon to answer murder charges.
The late Maxwell Paundi hailed from Maliseni Village in the area of Traditional Authority Mwadzama in Nkhotakota.
Police in Nkhotakota district are appealing to the general public to avoid taking laws into their own hands, but they should report suspects to police.
