On 20 May 2014 Malawi will hold tripartite elections in which Malawians will have the opportunity to elect Councillors, Members of Parliament and State President.

In preparation for the elections, the Malawi Electoral Commission has commenced the voter registration exercise which will be done in phases.

Making the announcement at the commencement of the registration exercise, the MEC Chairperson Maxon Mbendera said that they are conducting a fresh registration which means that everyone will have to register whether they registered during the previouys elections or not.

“When going for registration remember to take a valid identification document like a passport, even though it might be expired, a driving licence, a student identity card, marriage certificate, a birth certificate, employment identification document or an old voter certificate. You may also go with someone who has registered already to bear witness for you,” says the Chairperson’s statement on the MEC website.

Phase one of the registration exercise whcih started on 22 July covers Blantyre City, Chikhwawa, Mwanza, Nsanje and Neno.

Phase five 28 September to 11 October, 2013 Dedza, Ntcheu, mangochi district, Mangochi municipal council, Balaka
Phase six 15 to 28 October, 2013 Dowa, Lilongwe City, Dedza
Phase seven 1 to 14 November, 2013 Dowa, Mchinji, Lilongwe District
Phase eight 18 November to 1 December, 2013 Kasungu District, Nkhotakota, Ntchisi, Salima
Phase nine 5 to 18 December 2013 Chitipa, Karonga, Rumphi, Mzuzu City
Phase ten 22 December 2013 to 4 January 2014 Nkhata Bay, Mzimba, Likoma
