Schools to Reopen Next Month

Ministry of Education, Science and Technology says school will partially reopen on 7th September, 2020. The schools were closed in March,2020 as a precautionary measure against novel coronavirus.

Minister of Education Agnes NyaLonje told journalists the ministry has adopted a phased approach for the re-opening of schools, priotizing with examination classes.

“The schools will reopen on Monday, September 7th .
These include: standard 8, form 4, all final year students at colleges, IPTE 14 and examination classes for schools that offer International Curriculum,” she says.

NyaLonje says colleges, universities and schools that offer International curriculum will be allowed to take the second phase of students after three weeks from the day of re-opening.

“All colleges and Universities will have to decide on which groups to go first in consultation with the Ministry since these were at different stages,” she says.

According to NyaLonje, primary, secondary and Teacher Training Colleges (TTCs) will reopen during the second phase on Monday, 12th October.

“The following are in this category: Standards 5 to 7, forms 1 to 3, standards 1 to 4, and Initial Primary Teacher Education (IPTE 15),” she says.

The Education Minister says funds to support the schools have already been transferred to zonal accounts (Global Partnership for Education Funds).

“These funds will aid in the training of teachers and other relevant stakeholders, distribution and printing of guidelines and the purchasing of buckets and handwashing soap,” she says.

Ministry of Education says Primary School Leaving Certificate Examinations (PSLCE) will be administered between 30th September and 2nd October, 2020 while Malawi School certificate of Examinations (MSCE) will be administered between 22nd October to 30th November, 2020.
